Congratulations!

February 24, 2008

My prayer is that everyone will complete reading or listening through the entire New Testament.  Remember, if you miss a few days, pick up where you left off, and don’t give up.  If you have finished, keep up the good habit of reading your Bible everyday.  I will offer some resources in the comment section that I find helpful in reading the scriptures on a regular basis.

We will keep the 40 Day Challenge catagory on the blog, so that you are able to continue making comments.  For general comments on the adventure as a whole feel free to comment on this post.”

http://www.biblegateway.com/ Lots of resources here. Click on additional resources to listen to the whole bible on audio. I use this website constantly to look up scriptures using the keyword search.

http://www.faithcomesbyhearing.com/ This website is the home of the MP3 disks we used for the 40 Day Challenge. You can purchase additional disks, the old testament, and other audio bible resources. Some could make great gifts. Some FREE downloads for ipods or listen on computor.

As I kept listening to the audio Bible there were 3 times that my ears picked up because what I was hearing seemed out of sync with the rest of the gospels and epistles. I’m convinced that the totality of the New Testament is that we are saved through grace because of our faith and not through works. Three passages seemed to contradict this ….but since the Bible is God’s word and he doesn’t contradict himself, I must just not understand the verses or the context of the verses. I Tim 2:15 states that women are saved through childbirth. 1 Peter 3:21 says that we are saved through water baptism. Revelation 20:13 says that we will be judged by what we have done and that which is written in the books including the book of life. Leslie had one idea about the first verse. Preceeding verses encourage modesty and a turning away from worldly concerns like jewelry and dress. Maybe children help a woman think about things of God and spiritual issues rather than external things. The 1 Peter verse Baptists must love. The last verse might have something to do with how our actions influence our rewards but I don’t think so because the verses are clearly about judgement not rewards. Anybody have any good ideas??

I’m still finishing up, still a few days behind. I’m loving *hearing* the Word. I grew up hearing the lectionary (chunks of the OT, NT, and Gospels) being read aloud every Sunday in the NIV so it was interesting to hear the big chunks again; I realize I probably picked up a lot more than I thought as a child just hearing the stories aloud. I’m certainly picking up even more this time around! I enjoy reading but it’s been neat having ways to incorporate the hearing of the Word into my life.

Thanks Eric for helping facilitate this challenge.

    Hi Dean

It’s easier for me to not check out a lot of verses when it comes to my faith in Jesus Christ, probably the one that is more outstanding to me is Eph 2:8-9 For by Grace are ye saved through faith, not of ourselves, but it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast

I have a thought about the struggle with saved by grace alone and the emphasis the Bible seems to have on works. Certianly not a definitive answer by any means. We have a tendency in Western thought and culture to think of salvation solely in individualistic terms. I say a prayer, I get saved, I go to heaven. We focus on what might jeopordize our or “my” salvation. We need to keep in mind that Jesus came to save the whole world. Of course that includes me, but the emphasis is on the whole world, which includes people, societies, the planet, the forests. It seems to me that when we take into consideration God’s activity throughout time through the generations there is a balance that occurs, yes we are saved by grace to do good works and to be a good work in the world in which we live. For example, being a mom (saved through childbirth) is a part of being good and making the world more like God’s Kingdom.

Reading the New Testament still resonates in my soul. If you are taking the challenge and have stalled out a bit, be encouraged. Don’t give up. Keep reading or listening.

I am almost finished reading the Old Testament. Should finish tomorrow. As I read through I was amazed how it came to life when seeing the big picture of the story of God interacting with people.
